What is the YMCA?

The YMCA was established in London in 1844. At that time, it was the end of the Industrial Revolution in the U. K., and many young men were forced to do severe work in the city.
Young men in their twenties met to fix their life's present condition. The severe conditions had destroyed their hearts and their humanity. These men formed and organization which was based on the spirit of Christianity. This was the start of the YMCA(Young Mens Christian Association.).
YMCA activities which were started in London grew up to become the biggest young men's group in the world which has developed into 123 countries today. The first establishment of a YMCA in Japan, in 1880, was the Tokyo YMCA. For 124 years, it has played the part as a pioneer to modernize Japan's young men's education, sports, recreation, camp programs, etc. Also, the YMCA invented the sports of basketball and volleyball. Today it has acidities in about 100 main cities in Japan.
The Utsunomiya YMCA established in April in 1978. Sakuranbo Kindergarten was given permission as a School Corporation two years before that, and it became a School Corporation Utsunomiya YMCA Academy Sakuranbo Kindergarten. Foundation Utsunomiya YMCA establishment was approved by the Prefectural Office in Au. 1980, the Ashikaga YMCA was established in 1981, and The Shiooya Camp opened in April 1993. The name has been changed to The Tochigi YMCA Foundation in 1988, and now, activities are expanded in Utsunomiya, Ashikaga and Nasu. The first Social Welfare Corporation in Japan Tochigi YMCA, the special caring old persons home, "My Home Kiyohara" was established in the Kiyohara area, Utsunomiya in April 1993.
